The accelerated master's offers the high-achieving student the opportunity to earn two degrees, a BA/BS and a M.S. in economics in five years. Students apply to the combined program in their junior year and a GPA of 3.5 or higher is needed for admittance into the accelerated program. Once admitted as graduate students, students take 400-500 level courses at the graduate level their senior (fourth) year.

Adjustments to the baccalaureate course requirements follow:
Fourth year (replacing senior year in BA/BS program)
Econ 423 Statistics II - fall semestser
Econ 428 Mathematical Economics - fall semester
Econ 433 Public Finance - fall or spring semester
Engl 379 Technical Communications - fall or spring semester
 
Four of the following:
AgEc 521 Farming and Food Systems Economics
AgEc 571 Advanced Farm and Ranch Management
Econ 504 History of Economic Thought
Econ 531 Managerial Economics
Econ 540 Economics of the International Sector
Econ 550 Industrial Organizations
Econ 560 Economic Development
Econ 570 Resource and Environmental Economics
 
During the 5th year, the student will complete the core degree requirements of:
Econ 703 Advanced Macroeconomics
Econ 704 Advanced Microeconomics
Econ 705 Econometrics
Plus, any of the 4 courses of 400/500, "dual use" credit not completed in year four
Plus, credits in Research Paper, Econ 788, or Thesis, Econ 798, as appropriate.

The SDSU Environment

The Department of Economics at South Dakota State University offers a friendly, open environment to the aspiring graduate student. You will come to know your professors on a first name basis and your fellow students as well. The Department of Economics will provide you with a challenging, but flexible program that will enable you to focus on that area of economics/business in which you are most interested. It is not a "one size fits all" program. Moreover, there are Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships that can help fund your graduate degree.

South Dakota State University is the state's land-grant institution and the largest university in the state. SDSU is located in Brookings, SD, an attractive municipality of 18,000, located 50 miles north of Sioux Falls on I-29. Brookings offers a broad variety of cultural and sports events and easy access to every recreational aspect of the great outdoors, including fishing, hunting, hiking, and boating.
