Marketing Tools & Strategies  Utilize marketing tools, contracts, & basis patterns in the decision-making process

Marketing Plans  Employ marketing tools & strategies within a written marketing plan to cover break-even costs, meet price objectives, and/or leave appropriate profit window open

Fundamental Analysis:  Participants will gain familiarity of fundamental price analysis for principal crop and livestock markets in their area. The annual Commodity Outlook publication and the USDA links are additional resources for price data.

Marketing Tools & Strategies:  Participants will learn about available marketing tools (cash sales, cash forward contracts, futures contracts and options contracts). Contract specifications, basis patterns, and marketing plans are covered to assist producers in making informed marketing decisions. Participants will be challenged to evaluate how identified marketing tools perform with respect to seasonal changes in farm and/or ranch operations of different scopes and scales. Participants will also learn how marketing tools can be incorporated into marketing strategies such as hedging with futures, using put options, using synthetic strategies, and building fence strategies.

Marketing Plans:  Using HedgeSim™4.0, participants will evaluate the performance of different marketing strategies under specific market conditions. General suggestions for writing a marketing plan will be discussed in the context of a generic marketing plan. Finally, participants will use their knowledge of HedgeSim™4.0 and marketing plan construction to write an individualized marketing plan for their operation.
