These scholarships are awarded each year by the Economics Department. Other scholarships may be awarded as donations allow. The scholarship committee is chaired by Gary Taylor, and questions may be referred to him (address at end of scholarship list).

College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences Scholarships

Two college-level scholarships have a separate application process.

Farm Credit Services Scholarship. Preference will be given to students with interest in farm financial services. A brief written statement is required. The application form can be picked up in SAG 156.

 

SD Chapter of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. The scholarship application form and instructions can be obtained at the SD-AFMRA website www.asfmra-sd.com under the SDSU Scholarship link.

Max Meyers Scholarship. The Meyers Award recipient can be either an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in economics.  The recipient should have an average or above average GPA and have an interest in, or knowledge of, international rural economic affairs.

Vernon Bau Scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship is selected by the Economics Department Scholarship Committee. The recipient should be a junior majoring in agricultural economics or Agricultural Business with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Donald O. and Margery Egge Bunkers Scholarship in Economics. The recipient of this scholarship shall be a student majoring in agricultural business who attended high school in Moody, Lake or Lincoln counties in South Dakota.

Rex Cox Memorial Award. The recipient of the Rex Cox Memorial Award is selected by the Economics Department Scholarship Committee. The recipient must be a student majoring in economics at SDSU.

Herbert and Janna Allen Dakota Farm Enterprises Award. The recipient of this award must be a junior or senior student who is planning to go into farming.

Daktronics Economics Internship Award. The recipient of this award is chosen by the Economics Department Scholarship Committee and must be an economics department major who has completed an internship with Daktronics, Inc. The recipient must have at least one semester of course work left before graduation. The recipient is also judged on the criteria of academic performance, campus involvement, and career goals.

Richard F. Durland Memorial Scholarship. The first preference in selection for this award is that the student be a member of the Farm House fraternity. Preference will be given to students who were graduates of high schools in Marshall County, South Dakota. The recipient will be an Agricultural Economics or Agricultural Business major and be of above average academic ability. The selection will also be based on need.

Economics Alumni Award. Recipients of this award should show academic achievement and be active in extra-curricular activities.

Economics Department Faculty Award. Recipients of this award must be Economics majors who show academic achievements and are active in extra-curricular activities.

Rex and Jean Helfinstine Endowment Fund. The gift from this fund is awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior based on financial need. The recipient must have a GPA of 3.0 or better and be a resident of South Dakota, Iowa, or Minnesota.

Felix Hsia Scholarship in Economics. First preference for this award goes to juniors. Secondary preference goes to seniors. The recipient must have at least a 3.25 GPA and be majoring or minoring in economics. The recipient is expected to be active in extra-curricular activities that tend to instill a global perspective of life, career and economics. The recipient must have taken Geography 210 (World Regional Geography) and Religion 338 (World Religions).

John F. Kelly Scholarship in Real Estate. The recipient of this scholarship must be a returning student with a demonstrated interest in real estate appraisal or other careers in the real estate industry. The recipient shall be of sophomore standing or higher, an economics major, and have a GPA of at least 2.7. In the case of two equally qualified applicants, financial need shall be considered.

William Kohlmeyer Scholarship Fund. Recipients of scholarships from this fund must be agricultural economics or agricultural business majors with a sound academic background. Preference will be given to students from a farm or ranch background.

Larson Manufacturing Company Award in Economics. The recipient of this award must be an economics major and show interest in manufacturing.

Henry Louis Leonhardt Scholarship. The recipient of this award will be a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student majoring in agricultural economics or agricultural business. The recipient will be chosen based on academic performance and promise to the field.

Carol and Herman Lerdal Scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship is chosen by the Economics Department Scholarship Committee based on scholastic achievement. The recipient must be a business economics major and must have expressed an interest in business as a career. The recipient must also be a freshman, sophomore or junior.

Ardelle and Kenneth Lundeen Scholarship in Economics. The recipient of this scholarship will be a non-traditional student majoring in economics. The selection will be based on scholarship and promise to the profession. Financial need will not be the deciding factor.

Gabriel Lundy Memorial Award. The recipient of this award is chosen by the Economics Department Scholarship Committee. The award is given to a senior economics major.

Vernon Mason Memorial Scholarship. The recipient of this award will be an undergraduate economics major. Preference is given to students interested in selling life insurance.

Ron R. Reed Memorial Scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship shall be a business economics major who has completed her junior year and has a GPA of 3.2 or better. Applicants must include an essay on economic development and overall enhancement of the state of South Dakota. A resume highlighting the applicant’s college and community activities is also required.

Theodore W. and Esther Werth-Schultz Scholarship in Economics at South Dakota State University. The recipient of this scholarship must be majoring in economics or agricultural economics. Students majoring in business economics are not eligible. The recipient must have demonstrated financial need, a minimum GPA of 3.25, and junior or senior standing. The recipient must also be a positive, contributing member of the community.

South Dakota Association of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers Scholarship in Economics. The recipient will be a junior or senior student majoring in agricultural economics or agricultural business. The recipient will have an interest in farm management or rural appraisal.

South Dakota Grain and Feed Association Scholarship in Economics. The recipient must be majoring in an agriculture-related field and be a worthy student.

Fay and Mary Smith Memorial Scholarship. This recipient of this scholarship is chosen by the Economics Department Scholarship Committee.

Limen Smythe Scholarship. The selection of a recipient for this scholarship will be made by the Economics Department Scholarship Committee on the basis of academic ability and promise to the profession.

John E. and Dorothy L. Thompson Scholarship. The recipient for this scholarship is chosen by the Economics Department Scholarship Committee on the basis of scholastic achievement, participation in extra-curricular activities, and promise in the field of economics. Need will also be a consideration.
